Why Working in an Office Destroys Your Will to Exercise
6 in 10 busy professionals barely even attempt to exercise anymore, according to new research.
With so many busy professionals forced to spend most of their day sitting at a desk, there’s no wonder why our fitness levels have taken a hit, but a new study shows the extent to which office life can take its toll!
A survey of 1,000 office workers examined the impact of sedentary working routines on a person’s health and mentality around getting in shape and revealed 61% don’t regularly exercise. Less than 1 in 10 (9%) exercise very regularly and under a third (30%) manage to frequently work up a sweat.
The study also revealed the extent to which an office job can affect a person’s attitude to exercising with 57% blaming their sedentary office job for a decline in their health and fitness. Are you vibing these numbers?
That might be because of the sheer amount of time sitting at a desk – 92% said they regularly have days where they spend most of the day sitting down. What might be even more concerning is 58% said this is their norm.
Lack of exercise affects everything, including the most common daily tasks tiring. Nearly half credit their age for not being able to exercise as often as they would like, and a third say the older they get the more unmotivated they become. Ironically, moving your body because you’re motivated is not usually how it works. Moving your body = motivation!
These numbers show just how hard it can be to stay consistent with your training, particularly when the norm is being sedentary in a job/career that comes with a certain level of stress…on the daily.
Adults are busy with work and family among other things, finding time to exercise can be tough. Feeling like you don’t have enough time in your day to train. Work being too demanding to allow for a consistent training schedule. Feeling too exhausted to train after work. Thinking you’re too stressed out to even think about a workout…all contribute to the struggle being real.
According to the study, being too tired from work, having little to no motivation, and lack of time are the main reasons why training is not part of their regular lifestyle. The study also revealed that the extent to which an office job can affect a person’s attitude to exercising with 57% blaming their sedentary office job for a decline in their health and fitness.
Let’s change the narrative. If you’re feeling any of this and really want to start training, grab a sheet of paper and a sharpie and write “MOVE INTO MOTIVATION!” on it, and then put it somewhere that you will see it every day – like somewhere in your immediate workspace. Open your schedule and pencil in 30 minutes to train every day of the week. If it’s impossible to do it in the morning, do it during your day – right there in your office. If that’s not an option, pencil it in right after you ‘clock out’ before you go home. If you have to leave the office and head straight to another obligation (like picking up the kids), go for a 30-minute walk after dinner.
